I was thrilled when I heard I was to visit Kribi, a place known as the coastal jewel of Cameroon. I had heard intriguing tales about its pleasant climate, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture, but nothing prepared me for the beauty and charm I was about to encounter.
When To Go
My visit was in July, which turned out to be a perfect choice. The weather was pleasantly warm and the skies often clear, offering magnificent views of the shimmering Atlantic Ocean. However, any time of the year will gift you some uniqueness of Kribi.
How to Get There
Getting to Kribi was an adventure in itself. The journey from Douala, Cameroon’s largest city, took about three hours by road, offering scenic views of the lush rainforest and small settlements along the way. Public buses are available, but for comfort, hiring a private cab would be advisable.
Where to Stay
From the luxurious Hotel Lobe to the budget-friendly Paradis des Pêcheurs, Kribi offers various accommodation options. I stayed at the charming Ilomba Lodge, located right on the beach, and was smitten by the serene environment and excellent hospitality.
Activities and Tours
For those with an adventurous streak, Kribi has a plethora of options. From beach lounging and swimming to visiting local villages and exploring rich wildlife, Kribi promises a truly exhilarating experience. I particularly enjoyed the boat trip to the Lobé Falls, where the river spectacularly plunges directly into the Atlantic Ocean. 
Gastronomy
Trying out local dishes is an integral part of my travels, and Kribi didn’t disappoint. Its coastal location means there’s a variety of seafood. The brochettes de poisson (fish skewers) from roadside stalls were absolutely savory, and the local dish Ndole, a blend of bitter leaves, nuts, and meat, was delightfully flavorful.
Culture
Kribi hosts the Batanga, Basaa, and Pygmies tribes, each adding to the city’s rich cultural tapestry. I was fortunate to witness a traditional dance performance on the beach, the rhythm of the music and the vibrancy of the costumes left me spellbound. 
Nightlife, Transport, and Shopping
Though not bustling like bigger cities, nightlife in Kribi is subtly exciting. The beach bars offering delicious seafood and live music were a delight. Moving around in Kribi is relatively easy with taxis and motorbikes readily available. Shopping in Kribi was an interesting affair with local markets offering unique artisanal crafts, precious wood carvings, and colorful fabric.
Money and Tips
Cameroon uses Central African CFA Francs. It’s a good idea to carry some cash as not all places accept cards. Haggling is common in the local markets so flaunt your bargaining skills! Do respect the local customs and traditions and try to learn a few phrases in the local language for a more enriching experience.

Kribi is a hidden gem that had me falling in love with its serene beaches, culinary adventures, and rich cultural encounters. My journey in Kribi was more than a simple visit; it was an unforgettable exploration. For those seeking an offbeat destination filled with adventure and genuine warmth, I can’t recommend Kribi enough!
